Why it exists
The text match cut is everywhere on TikTok, Reels and Shorts. A word sits on screen, the shot cuts, and the same word reappears somewhere new. It looks like it should take a minute to make, and until recently it did not.
Every option failed in roughly the same way. Full editing suites could produce the effect, but only after an account, a subscription, a template hunt and a render queue, which is a great deal of overhead for a three second shot. Lighter web tools watermarked the result or metered how many times you could export it. Building it by hand in After Effects assumed you already knew After Effects.
None of that difficulty belongs to the effect itself, which is really just text, a font, a highlight and some motion. So we built the version with everything else removed: type a phrase, highlight the word you want, download the video.
How it works
Everything happens in your browser. Your phrase is drawn and encoded on your own device, and the finished file saves straight to your downloads. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue to wait in and no copy of your video sitting on a server somewhere. That is also why it can stay free, since the running costs are close to nothing.
There is a real trade in this. Because the work happens on your device, results vary a little between browsers and older phones take longer. We think that is worth it for the speed and the privacy, and if it stops being worth it we will say so here.
What it is not
This is not a video editor and will not become one. There are no timelines, no audio tracks and no effects library. If you need those, the alternatives page is an honest comparison rather than a strawman, and it says plainly where a full suite is the better choice.
How it is funded
The core export is free and we intend to keep it that way, paid for by advertising rather than by gating exports, watermarking your work or selling data. There is very little data to sell in any case, as the privacy policy sets out. If any of that changes it will appear here and in the terms first.
Who builds it
TextMatchCut is built and maintained by codedash.ai, a product and AI engineering studio. It began as an experiment in how much of a typical software product is actually load bearing rather than habit, and enough people started using it daily that we kept going.
